St. Joseph's Abbey: Spencer, Massachusetts

St. Joseph's Abbey is a monastery of the Catholic Order of Cistercians of the Strict Observance (O.C.S.O.), popularly known as the "Trappists", located in Spencer, Massachusetts.

The Abbey was founded in 1950 by Belgian and French Trappist monks from the Monastery of Our Lady of the Valley in Valley Falls, Rhode Island, which had burned to the ground. In the rustic hills of central New England, they established a new home in which to follow an age-old contemplative way of life.

The monastery became known internationally as the origin of the Centering Prayer movement, whose leading proponents were monks at the monastery: Fr. William Meninger, Fr. M. Basil Pennington and Fr. Thomas Keating.

Work has always been greatly esteemed in the Cistercian tradition, since it gives the monks the opportunity to follow in Christ' footsteps and share in His Divine work of creation and restoration. The monks produce products whose sale provides for their livelihood and for the care of the poor. Since the 1950s, they have produced Trappist Preserves, their popular line of jams and jellies. Since 1949, The Holy Rood Guild has created beautiful, finely-tailored liturgical vestments to enhance the dignity of the Sacred Liturgy.

Raspberry Preserves are my favorite and none are better than Trappist Preserves! These preserves are available in stores, however, I decided to order them directly from St. Joseph's Monastery where all the profits help the monks. Orange Marmalade is my favorite citrus preserve and the best is made by the Trappist monks in Spencer. I grew up with their marmalade on my english muffins since I was a little child...3/4 of a century ago!

Well, I took a chance and ordered from here. I got grape, strawberry, 3apricot marmalade and 2 lemon marmalade and 2 orange marmalade. It came fast nicely packaged. Just got them last Friday. Down 2 jars. The lemon marmalade is delicious if you like lemonade. Great on toast, muffins French toast. I love them all my 7 yo Grandson loves the grape, strawberry and the lemon. He loves the orange marmalade. He doesn't know I mix apricot in a bowl with pieces of chicken and salt and pepper we all love it. So, putting another order in tomorrow. It's so good. You think Welch's grape jelly is good. Try these

I first bought the Trappist strawberry preserved when I lived in CT, in the early 1980s. They were the best I ever had. I would occasionally buy and enjoy other flavors but strawberry is still my favorite. I moved to FL about 5 years ago and local stores do not carry them, so, I buy them by the case over the internet. I enjoy them on toast, on crackers with PB, on crackers with cream cheese, on English muffins. Don't tell anyone, but I've also taken a spoonful right from the jar.

Trappist makes the finest apricot preserves that I have ever had. It has the perfect ratio of fruit pieces to jam, with just the right amount of sweetness. I have purchased different brands of apricot preserves, and Trappist is far and away the absolute best. No other brand even comes close to second place.

I used the ginger preserve to make a juniper berry ginger reduction. My reduction poured and gleamed like a glaze for my smoked ham. It made "THE BEST" tasting glaze. I am going to use it again. I am reworking a traditionally Danish Christmas ham recipe. The ginger preserve with juniper berries makes a better reduction than the traditional recipe which requires the liquor Gin.

My husband and I really love the blueberry preserves. Loaded with blueberries and not too sweet. I wish we could buy it locally but can't find it in our area. The shipping charge always causes me to pause before ordering. However, that said, the packaging is excellent, and no worries about damaged goods upon receipt. If I wait for a sale, it takes some of the sting out of the shipping charge.

Over the years I tried several peach preserves. However, when I discovered Trappist Peach Preserves in one of my local stores I finally found the best one. Unfortunately, my local store no longer carries Trappist Preserves, but not a problem since I now order Peach as well as my other Trappist favourites directly from Monastary. Every variety of Trappist preserves and jelly's I order are fantastic and have been happy with each and every one. Ingredients are perfect and when shipped from Monastary, the secure packaging cannot be beat each and every jar is very well protected. In short, you would not be disappointed in the product or the supplier, both are definitely winners.

These products are great. Personal favorite on toast: elderberry, not overly sweet. Seedless red raspberry, a dollop in Icelandic plain yogurt with dark chocolate (80%) shavings, breakfast. Orange marmalade conserve on a biscuit with hot chicken, dinner. The Lemon marmalade on bread with some hot pepper pieces, out of the park! Thanks monks.

I love fruit but not usually jams or jellies. Generally, they are so sweet the fruit gets lost in all that sugar. Not so w these gems. My favorite, Damsum Plum Jam, is so good that the only thing missing from eating actual plums is the juice running down my arm when I bite in. Mouthwatering is a lackluster word to describe the heavenly flavor I haven't tasted since my grandmother spooned it into my mouth, warm from the stove.

I have grown up miles from Saint Joseph's Abbey in Spencer, Massachusetts, and have enjoyed the jams and jellies since my grandmother introduced me back in the early 60's. A few decades before my grandmother used to start the fire in the one room schoolhouse that existed about a mile from where the Abbey resides. You cannot find better quality and care in most products today. They are simply superb! This particular order was sent to my son in the D.C. area who truly enjoys them a few times a week as part of his breakfast. If you like/love preserves or jam's Trappist is the best. I have been enjoying Trappist preserves and jam's for many years and have never been disappointed in any of the flavours. The preserves and jam's are just great in every way, not too sweet but flavourful. I recently order my favorite's from the Monastery website, since my local store has limited varieties. The six jars arrived securely packaged and very quickly. I ordered Peach preserves, Blackberry jam, and Elderberry jelly since my local store did not have these. I highly recommend not only Trappist preserves and jam's, but have found Monastery a reliable source for these "treasures".

Trappist apricot preserves are far better than any other brand that I've tried (imported and domestic). The jam is full of large, juicy fruit pieces and has the most delicious apricot taste. It is the only brand in my home. I would like to request that Trappist resume making "Seville Orange Marmalade". That marmalade had the perfect balance of bitter and sweet, with lots of lovely orange rind. Unfortunately, your "Sweet Orange Marmalade" variety is not unlike any other brand.

The Cherry Preserves have been my favorite for probably 20 years. Very Similar to the preserves my grandmother used to make from the cherry tree in the back yard. Growing up in the 50's we never had store bought jellies, preserves, etc. I lived with my grandparents and Grandma always made our preserves and apple butter. The Trappist Preserves are as good as Grandmas and I can order a variety of flavors (haven't found any I don't like). Now I have a variety of my Trappist Preserves and Monks Bread on hand all the time. I easily order from their webstores and have not had any difficulties. The bread freezes well so I can keep an assortment on had. Really love Trappist Strawberry Rhubarb, Blueberry, Boysenberry, Orange Marmalade.

We tried this on a whim many years ago and found it refreshing on English Muffins. Later on, my partner put it in a daily serving of yogurt and has added it ever since. We have bought four full cases of the ginger preserve and keep using it every breakfast. We also have used single jars of Seedless Blackberry Jam, Lemon Marmalade, Kadoda Fig, Sweet Orange Marmalade, Seedless Raspberry and Cranberry Conserve. All of the Trappist Preserves we have tried have proven to be outstanding, flavorful, smooth, and easy to find locally. We even visited the Monastery Store to shop and find the location easy to get to and enjoyed the visit.

I originally bought a selection of flavors to use during the holidays for breakfast/Brunch/tea with visiting sons and guests and got rave reviews on every flavor I served. However, I am a baker and can say that using them in various baked items elevated the taste to another level! Damson Plum in a Bakewell tart was scrumptious! Raspberry used in my Linzer cookies were delicious! Blackberry and orange marmalade used in thumbprint cookies were a real treat. And the simple jelly roll I made with the Concord grape was the best ever! I cannot say enough about the quality and taste of Trappist jellies,jams,marmalades,and preserves!

For many years, my son has refused to eat any jam but Trappist Strawberry, and my favorite was Strawberry-Rhubarb. I just love it! This year I bit the bullet and ordered some through the mail, and took the chance to order varieties that aren't on the grocery shelf. Damson Plum is the first new variety I opened and I love it, it's not a close contender with Strawberry-Rhubarb. I love the fact that Trappist jams are not too sweet, they've perfected the balance between sweet and tart so the flavor of the fruit comes through. I'm adding toast again to my breakfast routine, just so i can enjoy the jam. I can't wait to try more flavors. When the pandemic is over, I'm looking forward to visiting their store in Spencer with a friend, just to restock and buy some other new flavors.

I have been buying Trappist preserves for years, actually decades. I always bought them in the grocery store, however, but due to the pandemic and not going to the grocery store any longer, I decided to order them via mail. I got to choose from my very favorite flavors, and wound up finding some that I had never seen before! It was an easy ordering and payment process, and fast delivery (they let you pick the arrival date and ship to coincide with your date). Getting the box in the mail was like Christmas - pulling out each jar with my daughter and oohing and aahing at all the flavors. We are slowly working through the flavors, and I have to say that lemon marmalade is my favorite so far. Best way to buy jam!

Excellent preserves! I've had a hard time finding Strawberry Rhubarb near me. I like this Trappist a lot. It has a lot of fruit in it, its pretty chunky. It may not spread super smooth if that's a concern for you-it isn't for me. And I think the preserves have the right amount of sweetness. They are sweet, but not overpoweringly so, like Smuckers can be. And it looked like its made from all natural ingrediants, always a good thing. Buy it!

I have tried all of their great varieties, and they are ALL GREAT, but my personal favorites are those with BIG CHUNKS OF FRUIT! Blueberry is my favorite; I JUST LOVE IT! I put the blueberry preserves on toast, or alternatively on Blueberry eggo waffles, in place of maple syrup. Trappist blueberry preserves on blueberry Eggo waffles is one of THE MOST DELICIOUS BREAKFAST COMBINATIONS I HAVE EVER FOUND, delicious X10!!! It is a fast, easy breakfast, and incredibly delicious! I have also used the blueberry preserves on vanilla ice cream. There too, it is OUTSTANDING! ...tastes like blueberry pie a la mode. All Trappist Preserve jellies share the same great quality, all are VERY FLAVORFUL. I have also never seen any comparable product with BIG CHUNKS OF FRUIT like theirs... they are RICH IN FLAVOR... it tastes SO GOOD!

I was unable to locate type in all of our local markets (even some our specialty stores) and so, I went to the internet. I have the fortune of living in Massachusetts, where the Trappist-made preserves from St. Joseph's Abbey in Spencer are available in many local supermarkets (like Market Basket). I love this Damson Plum jam. Not too sweet and tiny bit tart. I buy 4-5 jars at a time because only 1 store near me stocks Damson Plum and it is 15 miles away. When the jar is almost empty I add a bit of warm water and shake it up to make a 'syrup' for pancakes. The little jars are also great for reuse as well.

My local market stopped carrying their brand of currant jelly. I have tried several brands looking for a quality product and this is the only one that is just right, tart enough and not too sweet. Slightly runny but that is a tradeoff for having the proper proportion of fruit and the wonderful taste. Traditional jelly, meant for adults. I'm really grateful to find it still is being made.

I ordered one jar of the Ginger Preserve, it was a big mistake, should have ordered a few more if not a whole case. Th jar was empty within a couple of days. Not only it tastes good in savory sandwiches with pork, turkey and chicken, it appeared to have soothing effect on those of us who have coughs caused by those unruly stomach acids.

Very good Seville marmalade. Seville oranges are bitter. The marmalade should be distinctly tart with the bitterness offset by added sweetness. I've often found products claiming to be Seville to be too sweet. The Trappist product is pleasingly tart with a good orange flavor and carries a good amount of peel.
