MONASTERY COOKIE ASSORTMENT

Traditional cookies made by Benedictine Sisters in the monastery's bakery using simple ingredients, classic recipes, time-honored techniques and (of course) lots of prayer. These are truly Old World style cookies! Net weight approx 12 oz..

  • SPRINGERLE (6 cookies): Anise-flavored, crisp outside, soft inside. Cookie molds (with symbols of Christmas) are over 100 years old, brought by the sisters from Germany.
  • GINGERSNAP (10 cookies) : Said to have been invented by Benedictine monks, this sugar-coated cookie, chewy and spicy, is loved by young and old alike.
  • HILDEGARD (5 cookies) : St. Hildegard's own recipe! She recommended them for slowing the aging process, creating a cheerful countenance, lightening a heavy heart and releasing intelligence. They're delicious, too!
  • SHORTBREAD (5 cookies) : The simple, classic butter cookie that's simply delicious!

Ingredients

Springerle: Flour (wheat flour, malted barley flour, niacin, iron, thiamin mononitrate, riboflavin, folic acid), powdered sugar (cane sugar, cornstarch), eggs, butter, honey, baking powder (baking soda, cornstarch, sodium aluminum sulfate, calcium sulfate, monocalcium phosphate), anise oil.

Gingersnap: Flour (wheat flour, malted barley flour, niacin, iron, thiamin mononitrate, riboflavin, folic acid), white sugar, shortening, eggs, sorghum (sorghum, invert corn syrup), baking soda, ginger (ginger, sulfur dioxide), cinnamon, salt.

Hildegard: Flour (wheat flour, malted barley flour, niacin, iron, thiamin mononitrate, riboflavin, folic acid), brown sugar, almonds, unsalted butter (pasteurized cream, natural flavorings [contains milk]), eggs, baking powder (baking soda, cornstarch, sodium aluminum sulfate, calcium sulfate, monocalcium phosphate), cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, salt.

Shortbread: Flour (wheat flour, malted barley flour, niacin, iron, thiamin mononitrate, riboflavin, folic acid), powdered sugar (cane sugar, cornstarch), brown sugar, unsalted butter (pateurized cream, natural flavorings [contains milk]), shortening, cornstarch, vanilla.

Monastery Immaculate Conception: Ferdinand, Indiana

The Ferdinand Benedictines are one of the largest Benedictine communities of women in the United States. The religious community numbers 173 women, about 115 of whom currently live in Ferdinand at Monastery Immaculate Conception.

The sisters serve in the areas of education, parish work, health care, counseling, retreat and spirituality work, social services, and mission work. The Sisters of St. Benedict of Ferdinand were founded in 1867 by four young Benedictine sisters who came from Covington, Kentucky, to teach Ferdinand's German settlers.

In the past 140 years, over 1,000 women have entered the Ferdinand Benedictine community. Their faith, spirit, and energy have led to the establishment of six independent monasteries—in Arkansas, North Dakota, California, Louisiana, Indiana, and Kentucky—and missions in Peru and Guatemala.

The box of cookies was given to my mother in law whose cherished sister in law was a nun so the fact the the cookies were made by a nun was a plus, but she also loved the cookies as did everyone she shared them with so we are delighted with our purchase and plant to buy more. We are especially intrigued with the life-enhancing qualities that one of the cookies is supposed to have. It might just be happiness that carries on throughout the day. Thank you

I purchased cookies for myself and family members. They were very well received. The cookies were carefully packed (none broken) and were fresh and tasty. My favorites were the sugar cookies and the springerle's. The other cookies in the assortment were gingersnaps or ginger flavor. When you receive the box it seems small, but the cookies last. As they are flavorful you don't eat many at one time.

For years we have sent Nun Better cookies as Christmas gifts to faraway friends and family. Now that those are no longer available, we tried Simply Divine out for the upcoming season. They are just as fresh and delicious and we're looking forward to sending them for the holidays and having more for ourselves!
