SWEET IRRATIONAL WORSHIP (CD)
The Niles-Merton Songs

Kentucky born and bred singer and composer John Jacob Niles met Thomas Merton only a few times before Merton's untimely death in 1968. He was devastated by Merton's death and embarked on a 4-year journey to set 22 of Merton's poems to music. About half emphasize the beauty of nature; the others center on grief, violence and suffering. "For My Brother: Reported Missing in Action, 1943" is perhaps Merton's most famous poem, and Niles perfectly captures the overwhelming anguish Merton felt at the loss of his only brother. All songs performed by baritone Chad Runyon accompanied by pianist Jacqueline Chew. 22 selections; total time: 56:58

". . . experience Merton's poetry in a new dimension by listening to this well-crafted and splendidly interpreted recording." -- THE MERTON SEASONAL
