Lindisfarne Gospels
ST. MATTHEW SILK
The Lindisfarne Gospels are one of Britain's greatest artistic treasures. Written and illuminated in honor of God and Saint Cuthbert circa AD 715-20, its superb quality and intricate design is painted in a large and subtle array of pigments made from a handful of local plants and minerals. Eadfrith, Bishop of Lindisfarne was responsible for both script and decoration throughout these Gospels. Each of the four opens with a miniature of the appropriate Evangelist and an elaborate decorative "carpet" page based on the form of a cross. 100% silk twill, 12" X 66", hand-rolled hem.
