Queen of Angels Monastery: Mount Angel, Oregon
The Benedictine Sisters' history of service to the Church and the people of Oregon and the Pacific Northwest began in 1882. Mother Bernardine Wachter, OSB, led a group of Sisters and postulants from Switzerland to Oregon via Missouri. In 1887 they started building their permanent home in Mount Angel, near the Benedictine monks at Mount Angel Abbey.
For many years the Sisters operated Mount Angel Academy and Mount Angel College; they also founded the Benedictine Nursing Center. In recent years, their focus has shifted to serving the poor and sharing their monastic life with oblates, retreatants, volunteers, and visitors. As a community, and as individuals, they work to extend the presence of Christ to others through hospitality, stewardship and service. The Sisters' primary ministries are serving the poor and the homeless at St. Joseph Shelter and offering spiritual sustenance and renewal through Shalom Prayer Center. They also teach, nurse, counsel, cook, serve as spiritual directors and chaplains, and work as artisans and gardeners. Since 2005 they have been selling their award-winning line of Monastery Mustards.
