LEGAL AGE REQUIREMENT: ALL BUYERS AND RECIPIENTS OF PURCHASED ALCOHOL MUST BE 21 YEARS OF AGE OR OLDER. Beer sold by Monastery Greetings can be sold and delivered only to a person who is at least 21 years old. By placing an order for beer with Monastery Greetings you represent to us that you are at least 21 years old and the person to whom any beer will be delivered is also 21 years old. At the time of delivery, any shipment containing an alcohol beverage product may require the signature of an adult possessing and providing valid picture identification issued by a government agency (valid driver's license, military ID, passport or state ID) proving that he or she is at least 21 years old. We encourage you to use a commercial business address such as your office to assure the fastest delivery time. If delivery attempts are unsuccessful, your order will be returned to us. An additional fee will apply for return charges and for any requested reshipment. Monastery Greetings recognizes and complies with federal, state, and local laws regarding sale of alcohol to adults only.

MONASTERY GREETINGS IS NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR WEATHER RELATED DAMAGE. Common carriers do not provide climate control over shipments and cannot insure our packages from freezing or extremely hot weather. The purchaser assumes all risk brought on by the weather during shipment. Damage related to the weather and climate during shipment is not the responsibility of Monastery Greetings or the common carrier.

Title of all products sold is transferred to the buyer at the time the initial payment is made; this transfer occurs in the state of Ohio. By the act of purchasing alcohol products from Monastery Greetings, the buyer authorizes Monastery Greetings to act on his or her behalf in processing and shipping the order and to engage a common carrier on his or her behalf for shipment of product. By utilizing this service, the purchaser is representing that he or she is acting in compliance with his or her local and state laws regarding the purchase, transportation and delivery of beer. Please check your state's policies on alcohol shipments prior to placing your order. WARNING: Certain states prohibit the direct importation of alcohol and violation can be punishable as a misdemeanor or felony. It is Monastery Greetings' policy not to ship to certain states where direct shipment is prohibited and therefore we will not take orders for shipment to Utah, Massachusetts or other states where prohibited.

The purchaser represents that he or she has obtained any required permission, paid any required fees, is working through properly licensed intermediaries where required, is legally entitled to take possession of products and is legally entitled to take quantities ordered and once again confirms that he or she is at least 21 years of age.

Trappist Beer

Of all the beers in the world, only seven of them can use the name "Trappist": Achel, Chimay, La Trappe, Orval, Rochefort, Westvleteren and Westmalle. You can recognize them from the "Authentic Trappist Product" logo.

A Trappist beer is only given this name if it satisfies a number of strict criteria:

The beer is brewed within the walls of a Trappist abbey, by the monks themselves or under their supervision.

The brewery must be controlled by the monastery and have a business culture compatible with the monastic project.

The purpose of the brewery is not to make a profit. The income takes care of the livelihood of the monks and the upkeep of the abbey site. What is left over is used for charitable purposes, social work and people in need.

The Trappist breweries produce beers of an impeccable quality that is permanently controlled.

Trappist breweries strictly observe all standards in the areas of safety, health and consumer information. And the style of communication and advertising is one of honesty, austerity and the modesty appropriate to the religious environment in which the beers are brewed.

Scourmont Abbey (Abbaye Notre-Dame de Scourmont): Chimay, Belgium

Scourmont Abbey (Abbaye Notre-Dame de Scourmont) is a Trappist monastery on the Scourmont plateau of Belgium. The abbey is famous for its spiritual life and for its Chimay beer, brewed within the monastery under the control and responsibility of the monastic community. Life in the abbey is characterized by prayer, reading and manual work, the basic elements of Trappist life.

In 1844, Jean-Baptiste Jourdain, the priest of Virelles, suggested that the wild plateau of Scourmont was a suitable place for a monastery. However, all previous attempts to cultivate the barren plateau had failed. Fr. Jourdain obtained support for the proposed foundation from Prince Joseph II de Chimay and the abbots of Westmalle and Westvleteren Abbeys. Six years later, in 1850, a small group of monks from Westvleteren settled on Scourmont and founded a priory (raised to the status of abbey in 1871).

Hard work was required to transform the barren soil of Scourmont into fertile farmland. A cheese-making factory and a brewery were also built in order to meet the needs of the abbey and its foundations as well as to sustain employment in the region. All production respects the great monastic brewing tradition and takes place, even today, despite increased production, in the original abbey buildings.

Since its renovation in 1989, the brewery uses modern technology to back up traditional brewing knowledge that dates back to 1862. The water for the beer is drawn from a well located inside the monastery walls. The filtered solids from the beer mash are recycled into livestock feed which is given to the same cows that produce the milk for Chimay cheeses. Even though the brewery only operates from 7AM to 4PM out of respect for the schedule of monastic life, it produces two 250 hectoliter (52,850 pt) batches daily.

As with all other Trappist breweries, the beer is sold only for financial support of the monastery and its charities. The brewery business pays rent for use of the property within the abbey, which is used to support the monastic community. All of the profit from the sale of the beer is distributed to charities and for community development around the region.
