Missionary Sisters of the Precious Blood: Reading, Pennsylvania
The Congregation of the Missionary Sisters of the Precious Blood was founded by Abbot Francis Pfanner at Mariannhill, near Durban, South Africa in 1885. Abbot Francis sought "valiant, joyful women of faith" to spread the Gospel. From the original five sisters who followed Abbot Francis and co-founder Mother Paula Emunds, CPS (Congregatio Pretiosi Sanguinis), the congregation has spread throughout the world. At present, they number over 900 sisters. The first sisters of the order arrived in the United States from Europe in 1925. In 1952 the novitiate was moved to Reading, Pennsylvania.
As a missionary congregation, the sisters are involved in a great variety of ministries throughout the world, including parish/pastoral work, social work, all levels of education, domestic science, medicine, dentistry, AIDS/HIV ministry, retreat work (including the Mariawald Renewal Center), hospital chaplaincy, catechetics, art, and youth ministry. All the sisters' gifts and talents are put to use in their mission of spreading the Gospel, following the charge of Mother Paula to "Dare the Utmost!"
