 Marie Joseph Spiritual Center: Biddeford, Maine
The Marie Joseph Spiritual Center is operated by the Congregation of the Presentation of Mary, on order of women religious who participate in the teaching mission of the Church. The Spiritual Center has a unique setting in a cove off the coast of southern Maine, where it has offered a local presence since 1948, when the community purchased the Ocean View Hotel for use as a young women's boarding school known as Marie Joseph Academy. In 1978 the building became a Center for retreats, and so the name changed to Marie Joseph Spiritual Center, with its formal dedication in 1979.
The Center welcomes lay and religious women and men of all faith traditions who value time for reflection in the peaceful presence of a praying community. The staff offer presentations, days of recollection, preached as well as directed retreats, and spiritual direction. The Center's sustaining inspiration and zeal find their roots in that of their Congregation's foundress, Blessed Marie Rivier, whose desire was "to make Jesus Christ known, loved and to light the fire of God's love everywhere."
