THE BLACK MADONNA
The gold-imaged icon of Our Lady of Czestochowa is placed upon a thick slab of quartz-filled granite. The original, from Poland, has remarkable power and has been responsible for numerous miracles. A traditional icon of Eastern Orthodoxy, it depicts the Virgin Mary as the "Hodegetria" ("One Who Shows the Way"), directing attention from herself, gesturing with her right hand toward Jesus as the source of salvation. In turn, the child extends his right hand toward the viewer in blessing while holding a book of gospels in his left hand. The Madonna is portrayed in fleur de lys robes.
