Our Lady of Mount Carmel Retablo

OUR LADY OF MOUNT CARMEL RETABLO

Our Lady of Mount Carmel is the title given to the Blessed Virgin Mary in her role as patroness of the Carmelite Order. The first Carmelites were Christian hermits living on Mount Carmel in the Holy Land during the 12th and 13th centuries. Since the 15th century, popular devotion to Our Lady of Mount Carmel has centered on the Scapular of Our Lady of Mount Carmel (also known as the Brown Scapular), which is associated with promises of Mary's special aid for the salvation of the devoted wearer.

Carmelites see in the Blessed Virgin Mary a perfect model of the interior life of prayer and contemplation to which they aspire, as well as the person who was closest in life to Jesus Christ. She is seen as the one who points Christians most surely to Christ, saying to all what she said to the servants at the wedding at Cana, "Do whatever he [Jesus] tells you."

St. Patrick Retablo

ST. PATRICK RETABLO

St. Patrick's (389-461) work in Ireland was astounding: baptizing tens of thousands and establishing a native clergy and church. A native of Roman Britain, as a boy he was captured from Britain by Irish raiders and taken as a slave to Ireland, where he lived for six years before escaping and returning to his family. After entering the Church, he returned to Ireland as an ordained bishop in the north and west of the island. His work was a sign of tenacity and love in a land that had once held him in slavery. He has been honored since at least the 8th century as the patron saint of Ireland.

With her retablos, artist Ann Burt hopes to create renewed interest in the historical art of retablo making. Although they don't necessarily mimic the traditional look of the Mexican devotional paintings they recall, they share in their symbolism and purpose, which is to focus on prayerful devotion to God and the saints.

St. Catherine Labouré Retablo

ST. CATHERINE LABOURÉ RETABLO

Saint Catherine Labouré (1806 – 1876) was a sister of the Daughters of Charity who as a young woman received a vision and request from the Blessed Virgin Mary to create the Miraculous Medal. Anonymously, through her confessor, the message was brought to the attention of the local archbishop, and the medals began to be produced, gaining immediate popularity. Catherine lived and worked her remaining years as an ordinary nursing sister, and only after her death was it revealed that it was she who had brought the Miraculous Medal to the world. The medal, which honors the Immaculate Conception, is worn by millions today.

ST. FRANCIS OF ASSISI RETABLO

Saint Francis of Assisi (1181 – 1226) was born to a wealthy Italian family; after a carefree and worldly youth he renounced wealth and began to seek a spiritual life. Answering the call he heard in the crumbling church of San Damiano, "Francis, rebuild my church," he gathered followers and founded what became known as the Franciscan order. The Franciscans became known for joyful, simple worship and an embrace of poverty and humility in service. They preached conversion of heart and forgiveness as a way to peacemaking. St. Francis is the patron saint of animals, the environment and Italy.
