Based on traditional Eastern iconography, the center panel portrays a peaceful nighttime Nativity. The Virgin holds the infant Jesus, accompanied by ox, ass and sheep, with the star of Bethlehem overhead. On the left panel are Joseph and three blue angels who herald the birth. On the right panel three more angels and Mary's birth attendants all look on. Gold and silver foil highlights. 4 7/8 " X 7 3/8 " closed; span of 10 1/8 " open. Attractive gift box.

This travel-sized triptych, based on a late 19th-century icon from central Russia, depicts on its exterior Mary Magdalen, Mary Mother of James, and Salome approaching the Roman-guarded tomb. The interior portrays the risen Christ in front of the open tomb, flanked on the right panel by the women, with the angel who delivered the good news shown on the left. Silver foil highlights.
