THE BAPTISM OF JESUS
Painted in the Byzantine tradition using egg tempera paint with gold leaf gilding, and adhering to the iconographical canons of the Christian Faith, this contemporary icon shows John baptizing Jesus in the River Jordan, watched over by three angels and with a symbol of God's presence descending from Heaven as witness. The angels look down in to the murky water, a symbol of peril, up from which rise various creatures; John watches the voice from Heaven, unaware of how close he is to the water's edge. Very close to the description in the Gospel of Mark. 18" X 24"
