ABBEY OF GETHSEMANI
AFTER A STORM
Oil Painting
The Abbey of Gethsemani oil is 20" X 24", signed by the artist. $5000 unframed; shipping & handling depends on destination. The image shows the monastery just after a storm, as the sun begins to break through the clouds.
Gethsemani is an Abbey of the Order of Reformed Cistercians (Trappists) established in 1848 by a group of forty monks from the ancient Abbey of Melleray in France.
At present numbering some sixty-five members, the monastic family of the Abbey of Gethsemani perseveres in the search for God and the following of Christ under a rule and an abbot. Prayer and work ("Ora et Labora") are of vital importance in the monastic life. They earn their living by making cheese, fruitcake, and bourbon fudge. Monks with particular talents often have a chance to use them, thus there are monastic musicians, artists, gardeners, craftsmen. Work is seen as service and preference is given to work favorable to prayer.
