ST. FRANCIS OF ASSISI RETABLO
Saint Francis of Assisi (1181 – 1226) was born to a wealthy Italian family; after a carefree and worldly youth he renounced wealth and began to seek a spiritual life. Answering the call he heard in the crumbling church of San Damiano, "Francis, rebuild my church," he gathered followers and founded what became known as the Franciscan order. The Franciscans became known for joyful, simple worship and an embrace of poverty and humility in service. They preached conversion of heart and forgiveness as a way to peacemaking. St. Francis is the patron saint of animals, the environment and Italy.
With her retablos, artist Ann Burt hopes to create renewed interest in the historical art of retablo making. Although they don't necessarily mimic the traditional look of the Mexican devotional paintings they recall, they share in their symbolism and purpose, which is to focus on prayerful devotion to God and the saints.
Print from original art mounted on wood with leather strip for hanging, 5" W x 6" H.

ST. BONAVENTURE RETABLO St. Bonaventure (1221-1274, born Giovanni di Fidanza) was an Italian medieval scholastic theologian and philosopher and the seventh Minister General of the Order of Friars Minor (Franciscans). He is sometimes called the second founder of the order for his work in organizing and reconciling dissenting factions under a reconstituted rule. He was declared a Doctor of the Church and is known as the "Seraphic Doctor" because of his burning zeal. His Life of St. Francis was approved by the order as the official biography of its founder.
