Based on Russian iconography, the center panel portrays a beautiful nighttime Nativity. The Virgin holds the infant Jesus who is highlighted by the star that led the Magi to the manger. On the left, Joseph looks to Heaven and to a chorus of angels heralding the birth. On the right, the Magi, the shepherds and Anne (Mary's birth attendant) all look on.
